Vasco’s winning goal consolidates Puma’s good run for the Uruguay title

In the Clássico dos Milhões, the right-back had a private duel with Flamengo’s Varela, who is fighting for a place in the Celeste Olímpica

Author of the great goal that ensured Vasco’s victory over Flamengo, right-back Puma Rodríguez was one of the protagonists of the match, strengthened by a place in the starting lineup of the Uruguayan national team. The player battled for position with Varela, who was on the field for Rubro-Negro.

Both were called up by Uruguay’s interim coach Marcelo Broli for friendlies against Japan (24) and South Korea (28) at the end of the month. The two were at the last World Cup, but the Vasco player was a substitute and never entered the field.

– It was very important to win the three points. The group is wonderful, the fans too. When I saw the ball coming, I immediately grabbed it and was happy. We hadn’t won in a while (from Flamengo). We needed it to add up the three points – said Puma at the end of the game.

This was Puma Rodríguez’s second goal for Vasco, in back-to-back matches. In the defeat in Boavista, last Monday, the Uruguayan also scored. Last season, with Nacional, the right-back scored three goals.

Vasco will play again on Thursday, against Bangu, in São Januário, for the last round of the Guanabara Cup. Cruz-Maltino has 20 points and is in third place, depends only on his own strength to qualify for the semifinals of the Carioca Championship.
