Chris Rock Relives Will Smith’s Slap, Explains Why He Didn’t Stand Up For Himself At The Time

If there was one event that marked the 2022 Oscars, it was Will Smith’s slap to Chris Rock on stage.

This came after the comedian made a joke about the baldness of Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia areata (which is why her hair can’t grow).

Although the actor publicly apologized and his wife expressed her desire for a reconciliation between the two, the comedian relived what happened in a Netflix special. That’s what he said.

On March 4, the “Grown Ups” actor starred in Netflix’s first fully live-action show: a stand-up comedy called “Selective Outrage.”

According to “Variety” magazine, his new routine mostly referred to the incident on the evening of March 27, 2022, however, only at the end did he directly address the issue.

One of the things he revealed was that the slap hurt:

“People ask me ‘did it hurt?’ It still hurts, I have ‘Summertime’ (Will Smith song from 1991) playing in my ears.

In the same joking tone, he mentioned the physical difference between him and Will Smith:

“He’s a lot bigger than me, we’re not the same size. Will Smith makes movies shirtless, you’ll never see me make a movie shirtless. Will Smith played Muhammad Ali in a movie, do you think I auditioned for that role? I did Pookie in (the movie) ‘New Jack City,’ I did a piece of corn in (the movie) ‘Pootie Tang.”

He later revealed that his show was named after the actor from ‘The Prince of Rap’:

“Will Smith Exercises Selective Rage (‘Selective Rage’)”.

He further explained that he believed it had “nothing to do” with the actor’s bravery that night. Instead, he attributed his actions to the anger Smith would feel over the relationship between Jada Pinkett Smith and August Alsina, which they went public with in July 2020:

“His wife was his son’s friend. Normally I wouldn’t talk about it (but) I don’t understand why two talented people would do something so low. They have been unfaithful to all of us, everyone here has been deceived. None of us have interviewed the person who cheated on us. She hurt him more than he hurt me.”

On the fallout from the “Red Table Talk” show, Rock said:

“Everyone was calling him p…, I tried to call him and express my condolences, but he didn’t answer. Everyone called him p… and who did he hit? My”.

The comedian also talked about how his perception of his co-star has changed since the 2022 Oscars:

“I’ve loved Will Smith, all my life… he makes great movies, I’ve supported Will Smith all my life (…) And now I’m watching ‘Emancipation’ just to see him get beat up. “

That comment was a reference to the actor’s most recent film, in which he played a slave fighting for his freedom.

The truth is, this isn’t the first time Chris Rock has used Will Smith’s slap for a comedy routine. Already last July he had expressed on a show that he does not feel like a victim of the coup, something he repeated on this occasion.

To close his monologue, the comedian answered why he didn’t hit his attacker that night: he owes it all to a lesson from his parents.

“Because I have parents, because they raised me. And you know what my parents taught me? You don’t fight in front of white people,” Chris Rock said before leaving the stage.
