The true story of ‘Todo Dia a Mesma Noite’, a Netflix series

In early 2023, “Todo Dia A Mesma Noite” was released on Netflix, a miniseries based on “Todo día a mesma noite: A história não contada da boate Kiss”, the book by Brazilian journalist Daniela Arbex.

This project is a memorial that brings together the testimonies of survivors, relatives of victims, rescue teams, medical personnel and other people involved in the fire at the Kiss nightclub that happened in January 2013.

In the early hours of January 27, 2013 in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, 242 young people lost their lives as a result of a fatal fire at the facility.

Around 02:30 the band Gurizada Fandagueira appeared on stage, where the singer lit a firework.

But the flames from the fireworks reached the ceiling, which was made of soundproof material, and quickly spread throughout the nightclub.

The place became a tragedy: fire and smoke were everywhere. As if that was not enough, according to the survivors, the guards did not let the helpers out because they thought it was a fight and they would leave without paying.

The youths tried to escape through the emergency exits of the bathrooms, which in fact did not exist. This is how a large part of those present died tragically.

The fire left 242 dead and 636 injured, making it the second deadliest in Brazilian history (surpassed only by one in 1961).

Authorities said most of those in attendance did not die from burns caused by the fire, but from suffocation after inhaling toxic fumes from the nightclub’s roof. Others were crushed to death.

In addition to inadequate roofing material, anomalies in the narrow and unique exit, and the use of fireworks inside the venue, exceeding the maximum capacity was also reported. There were 1,300 people, when the maximum capacity was 691.

Both the Netflix series and the book recount what it was like for the victims’ parents to identify their children’s bodies, what the battle against death was like in hospitals, and how family members faced the negligence of businessmen, politicians and citizens.
