Epicenter was recorded in the Umbria area
An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck the Umbria region of central Italy on Thursday (9), the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported.
Frightened residents took to the streets of cities, including the capital Perugia, but there is no news of serious damage. Also according to the organ, the epicenter took place in Umbertide, at 16:05 (local time), at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The mayor of Umbertide, Luca Carizia, told ANSA that any damage is occurring and that checks have begun in hospitals and schools. But, so far, no problem notification has been made.
The central region of Italy has been experiencing medium-intensity earthquakes for some months now, being an area with high seismic activity.
In 2016, the municipality of Amatrice – 160 kilometers from Umbertide – was devastated by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake which killed 299 people. A little further away, 200 km away, is the city of L’Aquila, which was also seriously hit by an earthquake measuring 6.3 degrees in 2009, which caused 309 victims. .
