In 1993’s Free Willy the whale was an orca named Keiko, and although his story wasn’t as happy as in the movie, the animal became a star alongside his co-star Jesse, played by Jason James Richter.
In the case of the actor Jesse, he entered show business at a young age, because at the age of 5 and while living in Hawaii, he was discovered by a Japanese agent and offered some minor roles in Japanese commercials.
However, as he told the Orlando Sentinel in August 1993, when he was 13 he was chosen out of 4,000 kids to play the role of Jesse in “Free Willy,” which changed his life and catapulted him to fame.
Jason James Richter eventually became one of those child actors who shined in his childhood and then his fame faded. Now, 30 years after the film premiered, we show you what happened to it and what it looks like.

What happened to Jason James Richter, the kid from ‘Free Willy’?
In the first film Jesse is a troubled child abandoned by his mother. In a park he meets a captive orca and befriends it. So Jesse sets out to free Willy from his confinement as much as possible.
Directed by Simon Wincer, “Free Willy” was a box office success and a sequel was approved. The second installment was released in 1995, followed by a third in 1997, both reuniting Jesse and Willy in their plots.
Between the two sequels, Jason James Richter had other roles, including the title role in ‘The NeverEnding Story III’ (1994) and appearances in ‘Cops and Robbersons’ (1994) and ‘The Client’ (1996).
But after 1997, when she appeared in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Rugrats” and “Laserhawk,” when she turned 18, she told The Daily Beast that she decided to get away from Hollywood to take a breather and devote herself to acting complexes.

Jason James Richter stayed away from the screen for about 10 years, until he returned in “Bones” in 2009, “Tekken” in 2010 and “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” in 2011. Since then he has been active as an actor.
But many of the roles of the actor (now 43) have been in low-budget films, and even his name appeared more in the media due to an off-screen scandal.
In 2018, Entertainment Tonight reported that the actor was arrested on domestic violence and vandalism charges following an argument he had with his then-girlfriend.
The domestic violence charge was dismissed, but not the vandalism charge, for which the actor was sentenced to 36 months of probation, four days in jail and to attend a 52-week violence management program.
He told Page Six in December 2018 that he never asked for a reduced sentence or to have the charges dismissed because he knew the things he was doing.
2021 saw his last credits appearing in the films ‘The Little Things’ with Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto, as well as ‘Last Call’ with Jeremy Piven and Taryn Manning.
