Liverpool are defeated by Bournemouth and miss the opportunity to progress to G4 of the Premier League

The Reds are now focused on rebuilding the UEFA Champions League

Bournemouth won the Liverpool 1-0 this Saturday at the Vitality Stadium, in a match valid for the 27th round of the Premier League. In an uninspired match between the stars of the RedsBilling scored the winning goal in the 27th minute of the first half.

With the win the Cherries escaped the relegation zone, climbing from 20th to 16th place and gaining prominence in the table. Liverpool, on the other hand, lost the chance to leap into fourth position, which gives them a place in the preliminary round of UEFA Champions Leagueand can still be overtaken by Newcastle in the first round, remaining temporarily out even from Europa League.

RACE START

The start of the match was quite eventful for both sides. In the 5th minute Van Dijk took advantage of the corner and headed past Neto, but Lerma managed to save high on the line. Three minutes later, it was Bournemouth’s turn to respond: Ouattara found himself face to face with Alisson and dribbled past the goalkeeper, but lost his corner and ended up in the net from the outside. Aged 13, Gakpo scored after Darwin Nuñez’s header. The referee saw an offside in the move and disallowed the Dutchman’s goal.

SCORE SURPRISE

On 27′ the hosts open the scoring. Ouattara was thrown on legal terms and dismissed Van Dijk, crossing on the edge of the box. Billing, the Cherries’ highlight this season, just pushed for goals and went on to score his sixth Premier League goal.

SECOND STAGE PRESSURE

Liverpool came back for the second fastest time and undertook some early pressure. In the 3rd minute Diogo Jota, who came in on the counterattack, made an individual move and took for a corner, but Neto made a good bridge and looked for him. Two minutes later, Darwin Nuñez took advantage of the cross and sent it over the crossbar.

PENALTY FOR THE REDS

After Milner’s cross, Diogo Jota presented himself at the far post and with a header. Smith came in with his left arm outstretched and ended up taking the ball out of the way of the goal. The referee was called by the VAR and called the offence. Salah collected the ball and took the penalty but ended up hitting it too wide and squandering Liverpool’s best chance of the game.

FAILED ATTEMPTS

Bournemouth withdrew towards the end of the game and Liverpool tried betting on aerial play, but were unsuccessful. At the end of the match, Gakpo had a big chance after he relieved goalkeeper Alisson. The ball ended up going over the goal and the home side managed to hold on to a vital victory to escape from the deep end and out of the relegation zone.

Liverpool are back on the pitch next Wednesday, at 5pm, for the UEFA Champions League, who needs to reverse a three-goal deficit against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. Bournemouth are only playing next weekend, visiting Aston Villa for the Premier League.
