The German brand confirms that it will have electric and non-hybrid cars in the current investment plan, which has already had 8 launches
Volkswagen will have 100% electric cars in Brazil by 2025 and will not launch any hybrid models in the current investment plan. The information was given during an event in Salzgitter, Germany, where the Volkswagen Group is building its giant battery factory.
The launches are part of Volkswagen do Brasil’s current R$7 billion investment plan, which started in 2022 and runs until 2026. The brand’s first electric car in the country is expected to be the Volkswagen ID.4, an SUV about the size of the Taos and has rear wheel drive.
The Volkswagen ID. The Buzz, also known as the electric Kombi, could also be launched, but there is a lot of demand for this vehicle in Europe and the United States, so Brazil will have to wait. Other electric cars with possibilities are the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX, Volkswagen ID.5, and even the Volkswagen ID.3, which is the size of the Golf.

For the moment, Brazil is not on the Volkswagen Group’s global map to have a large EV operation. Thomas Schmall, former president of VW do Brasil, is currently responsible for the gigafactory in Szalsgitter. He said VW Group needs to balance investments globally, as it cannot invest in all markets at the same time.
“If you ask me if Brazil will invest in electric cars in the short term, I say no, but if you ask me in the long term, I say yes,” Schmall told Guia do Carro.
According to Schmall, “Brazil has a sustainable technology ‘for decarbonisation, which is the ethanol-powered engine’, which is why it is not part of the priority for battery electric cars in this first phase, which will last until 2030.
In any case, a future hybrid Volkswagen will only come back on the market if it uses ethanol. Volkswagen’s first hybrid in Brazil, the Golf GTE, was just for the brand to enter the segment, but it didn’t have an enthusiastic reception from the public, as it was a generation that was falling out of line.
Of the 15 cars planned for 2025, 7 have already been launched: Jetta GLI, Novo Polo, Polo Track, Gol Last Edition, Novo Polo GTS, Novo Virtus and Polo Track 1st Edition. We can predict: New T-Cross, New Nivus, New Amarok, an unprecedented compact sedan and an unprecedented compact SUV. There is only room for two electric cars.
