Yellow Gear: One in ten women have endometriosis

The Yellow March Campaign warns of the importance of awareness and early diagnosis

The data from the Ministry of Health say so One in ten women suffer from symptoms of endometriosis in the country. More than 26,400 visits were made in the Unified Health System (SUS) in 2021, which is why, in March, we drew attention to the awareness of symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis of endometriosis, to prevent the development of the disease . , in its severe form, can cause infertility.

According to Dr. Thiago Borges, a surgeon specialized in endometriosis at the Complexo Hospitalar de Niterói (CHN), in Rio de Janeiro, which belongs to Dasa, the delay between the first symptoms and the identification of the disease can be up to ten years. “Today it is thought that the diagnosis is easy to make, however the interval between the onset of symptoms and confirmation of the disease can be up to ten years. Because endometriosis can have several signs that are often not taken into account by doctors , the woman may think that it is normal to feel cramps during menstruation or have pain during sexual intercourse.”

“Because it is a disease that can significantly compromise the quality of life of women, as well as affect marital fertility, an early diagnosis can directly interfere with the patients’ prognosis. With appropriate and early treatment, we can offer this patient a better quality of life and not let her reach serious conditions that put her physical integrity at risk or that could hinder her desire to be a mother. Early diagnosis is the key to success in the treatment of endometriosis”, adds the surgeon.

Symptoms include signs of pain during intercourse, constant and progressive menstrual cramps, intestinal and urinary pain and bleeding during menstruation, and difficulty getting pregnant.

There are several theories about the causes of endometriosis, but no scientific proof. What can currently be highlighted are the risk factors considered modifiable, those linked to the consumption of food, caffeine and alcohol, for example, and the non-modifiable ones, which are linked to genetic problems, prematurity at birth and low weight. birth.

Today there is a cure for the disease, but it is important to underline that each patient has his own needs and, therefore, one therapy is different from another. “Each patient must have an individualized approach to the disease, taking into account his ailments, wishes and extent of the disease. Surgery for a patient with endometriosis will only be indicated in case of failure of clinical treatment or when the lesions offer organic damage to her “, explains Dr. Thiago.

“Minimally invasive surgery is already a reality for the treatment of endometriosis worldwide, however, with the arrival of robotic surgery, the procedure has been optimized and has a better result in the face of more serious diseases, as it provides greater ergonomics for the surgeon, through 3D vision, finer and more delicate movements, less bleeding, less postoperative pain and an earlier return to daily activities”, underlines the specialist.

Patients with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of endometriosis should closely observe symptoms with the help of a multidisciplinary team specializing in this condition. To improve their quality of life, monitoring by gynecologists, urologists, coloproctologists, pain doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists and psychologists is indicated.
