Last night, France 3 aired Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained at 21:10. But, like the TF1 channel in 2017, it’s not the same version that viewers were able to discover in theaters, nor the one available on DVD/Blu-ray.
Cue some gory shots in at least three scenes: dog killing, bare-knuckle combat, and the big final shootout in Candyland, which suddenly becomes a lot less readable in any case because of the consistent, inflicted wounds.
When asked at the time about exactly these cuts, TF1 elaborated, only allowing cuts to two scenes instead of three: “It was Sonny and Quentin Tarantino who slightly reworked two scenes. TF1 had no involvement” He explained before adding that these wounds are present in everyone and everything “One minute and eleven seconds of film”.
Enough to make TF1 (and therefore France 3 last night) stick to the pictogram banning children under 12, where broadcasting the cinema version would have earned the channel some sort of settlement from Arcom (CSA’s new name). which allows the distribution of films prohibited in rooms under the age of 12 only after 22:00. An unattractive amount of time for the audience, especially since QT’s film is almost three hours long.
