City mayor says ‘political battle’ will begin
The city of Milan, Italy, had to stop this Monday (13) the registration of children born abroad of homosexual parents and who were generated through medically assisted reproduction. Therefore, registration is only permitted when a “traditional adoption” is made.
The suspension came after the mayor of the city, Giuseppe Sala, consulted the Interior Ministry of Giorgia Meloni’s government and received indications to block registrations due to the decisions taken by the various Italian judicial bodies. He himself communicated the entities and organizations that fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in the city.
In his weekly podcast this Tuesday (14), Sala spoke about the decision and said he was forced to follow the provision also for the safety of public employees.
“For me this is a step backwards from a political and social point of view, and I am sorry for the parents who thought they could count on this possibility in the city of Milan. Enrollment does not only depend on political will, but it is an act that logically, it takes place with the administrative apparatus of the city and I, also considering the position of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, cannot expose a public official to personal risks of a judicial nature”, said the municipal manager.
The prefecture’s decision is based on a 2004 law, which establishes that pregnancy with assisted methods can only be allowed for couples of different sexes. This is the same legislation that prohibits so-called “surrogacy”.
LGBTQIA+ organizations reported that in the conversation they had with Sala, the mayor pledged to make this a personal “political battle” for the city government. The information was confirmed by the leader himself in his podcast.
“It should be the legislator who authorizes the measure with a law that already exists in other countries, such as European countries, for example, Spain and Denmark. The registration of the child of a homosexual couple, regardless of the adoption procedure, is more onerous and still troubled today in particular cases”, he pointed out.
The councilor of the Brothers of Italy (FdI), the same party as Meloni, Matteo Forte, has already published a note celebrating the decision and said he was “happy that the right has won”. The politician was the one who wrote a letter to the Interior Ministry questioning Sala’s decisions, but said “I don’t care that my initiative contributed” to the suspension.
The president of the “Rainbow Families” group, Alessia Crocini, declared that “the mayor of Milan had to give in to pressure from the Meloni government and, in the end, came to a painful and unjust decision”.
“We know how much this government is working to remove the minimum of citizenship rights from homosexual families in Italy. But in Italy there are already boys and girls with two mothers or two fathers, and ministers [Matteo] Planting himself [Interior] and Prime Minister Meloni must come to terms with it”, concluded Crocini.
