At the beginning of the last chapter of the first season of ‘The Last of Us’, 1×09, we see how Ellie is more distant and quiet than usual, visibly affected after the end of episode 1×08 of ‘The Last of Us’. Although Joel tries to cheer her up by drawing conversation from her and joking with her, the teenager is quite bummed out. Or at least she was until they meet a creature that lifts their spirits and smiles back: a giraffe.

Yet amidst all the chaos, the series has shown us reasons for hope. They have been few, yes, but very intense, like the scene in bill and frank strawberries in 1×03 of ‘The Last of Us’ or the wonders of the mall in the story of Ellie and Riley in episode 1×07 of ‘The Last of Us’. With the appearance of the giraffe, we have another one of those magical moments. The majesty of the giraffes and Ellie and Joel’s reaction to them, all accompanied by Gustavo Santaolalla’s beautiful score, truly they open a small door to hope and beauty in such a dark and pessimistic world like the one in the series.
The encounter with the giraffe, her interaction with it as she tries to feed it, and the sight of the herd running free through the city all serve as a way to reinvigorate Ellie. After that, Ellie determinedly turns to Joel and insists that they finish what they started, apparently revitalized to complete the final stage of their mission. With Joel equally committed to the end of his journey, the giraffe scene in ‘The Last of Us’ episode 9 serves to give Joel and Ellie the final push to achieve the goal for which they have been fighting life and death all the way.
