The series The Last of Us ended its first season on a high note, thus far setting a new mark in the launch day ratings for an episode of the series. The final episode, titled “Procure a Luz,” was seen by 8.2 million viewers across HBO channel and digital platforms this Sunday, March 12.

Throughout the entire series, there has been an almost continuous increase in viewers episode after episode. According to HBO, the series’ average viewership for its first six episodes is now around 30.4 million viewers across all platforms, with the opening episode peaking at 40 million.

Outside the United States, The Last of Us has reached the rank of the most watched series in the history of HBO Max, both in Europe and in Latin America.

  • The Last of Us has set records for HBO since its debut in January. Viewership grew consecutively in the first four weeks, while the first episode reached an audience of 4.7 million on its opening day, making it HBO’s second-biggest debut (behind only House of the Dragon) From waterfront empireseries launched in 2010.

    Already in episode 3, viewership increased by 37%, with 6.4 million people tuned in to HBO Max and linear channels – and this with the first half of the episode dealing with the NFL semi-final, a very watched event on American TV. In episode 4, the audience increased to 7.5 million viewers, despite the competition with the Grammy ceremony.

    HBO has decided to release episode 5 on HBO Max early so as not to compete directly with the Super Bowl. But according to Nielsen streaming rankings, The Last of Us it even hit a milestone the week episode 5 premiered. The series was streamed over 1 billion minutes during the week of January 30 to February 5.

    The final episode, despite competing for the Oscar, surpassed the viewership of the penultimate episode, marking a 74% increase from the January series premiere, which had 4.7 million viewers.

    The Last of Us is a series based on the PlayStation exclusive game Naughty Dog set 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts out as a small job soon turns into a brutal journey as both must traverse the United States and depend on each other for survival.

    The HBO production stars Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman, as well as Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene, Elaine Miles, Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.

    The Last of Us is written and produced by Craig Mazin of Chernobyl and Neil Druckmann, creator of the game.
