1 – The Whale (2023)
After its presentation at the Venice Film Festival, Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale is one of the most talked about films of recent months. Brendan Fraser’s performance drew particular attention, making the comedian a favorite for the Best Actor Oscar. Oscar, which he finally received with great emotion.
With impressive make-up (also an Oscar winner), the Canadian-American actor portrays a 270-kilogram man in Whale trying to connect with his daughter as his final hours approach. Dark and radical, this camera, adapted from Samuel D. From Hunter’s play, it relies heavily on the acting of an actor emerging from a long desert crossing. “The Whale” is the highest-rated film in Brendan Fraser’s filmography according to AlloCiné viewers.

2 – Clash (2005)
Oscar winner for Best Picture in 2006, Clash is an amazing choral movie with a 5 star cast! Two car thieves. Mexican locksmith. Two police inspectors who are also in love. housewife and her husband District Attorney. All live in Los Angeles.
They and many others do not know each other, their lives should never have crossed. However, over the course of the next 36 hours, their fates collide and reveal what each of them wished they had hidden or not seen. Brendan Fraser plays District Attorney Rick. To prepare for the role, the comedian spent a lot of time with Steve Cooley District Attorney from Los Angeles. The actor admitted that he learned a lot from her.
“My character finds himself in a moral dilemma. Rick is basically a good person, but he’s human… he has weaknesses, he’s not immune to mistakes like the rest of us, and that makes him an interesting character.”
3 – Mrs Winterbourne (1996)
He’s not yet the star most people associate with George of the Jungle and The Mummy Adventurer, but Brendan Fraser is already making an impression in Mrs Winterbourne, a tender romantic comedy in which he plays young firsts opposite Shirley MacLaine and up-and-coming TV presenter Ricky Lake.
A double role to be exact, as he plays both a rich lover and his twin brother, who is unfortunately killed in a train derailment at the beginning of the film. Mrs. Winterbourne is, of course, the third adaptation of the novel I married a shadow by William Irish, but it departs from the versions successively interpreted by pairings Barbara Stanwyck / John Lund and Natalie Bay / Frances Haster in 1950 and 1983, with its much lighter treatment as Pretty Woman. Yes, we are in the mid-1990s then!
4 – Gods Not Demons (1998)
Knowing that Brendan Fraser is now an Oscar winner for a movie called The Whale, Gods Not Demons now seems prophetic. Indeed, this Bill Condon feature film depicts the final days of Frankenstein director James Wiley’s life.
He talks about his career, his involvement in the First World War and his love for gardener Clay Boone, camped by Brendan Fraser. Before exploding into the public eye a year later in The Mummy, the actor showcased his dramatic talents in the film Neither Gods nor Demons.
Thus, he looks very unsettling in James Whale’s costume with a moving Ian McKellen. Bill Condon won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for this little-known but definitely worth watching!
5 – The Difference (1993)
In the early 90s, Brendan Fraser was filming with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, before the film teamed up with Will Hunting. With the French title La Différence (School Ties en VO), this film is pretty much forgotten because it had little success on release and with little airplay (it’s not available on VOD or French streaming platforms), the 5th highest. Brendan Fraser’s filmography is rated by internet users. This is the first major role that the actor has been given. A pivotal film in his career.
This drama takes place in the 1950s. Brendan Fraser plays David Greene, who joins a prestigious school to help the football team beat their rivals, but he has to hide the fact that he is Jewish.
The film is directed by Robert Mandel, who directed many episodes of the TV series (including The X-Files) and in terms of cinema we owe him The Substitute with Tom Berenger.
The Whale, currently in theaters, marks the actor’s comeback, earning him an Oscar. Between serious injuries – particularly from filming The Mummy saga – about the sexual abuse he recently confided in and depression, Brendan Fraser disappeared from the screen for almost a decade and made a timid return to television. After Trust in the late 2010s with Doom Patrol. Until she met Darren Aronofsky.
