The new era begins in DC!
James Gunn, the man in charge of DC Studios along with Peter Safran, already has a new movie to direct: ‘Superman: Legacy’. The irreverent filmmaker, who is the company’s president and chief executive officer, revealed Wednesday that he will direct a previously announced reboot of the Superman franchise. Gunn also wrote the script and Safran will produce.
‘Superman: Legacy’ also released its first plot synopsis, saying the film “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as passé.” As is often the case with the director, Gunn shared the news on Twitter (with an emotional anecdote). “Yes, I’m going to direct ‘Superman: Legacy’ that will be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me that when he saw the release date he burst into tears. I asked him why. He replied: “Uncle, it’s dad’s birthday.” He hadn’t noticed me”

Along with the news came a thread in which he explained his relationship with the project. “I lost my father almost three years ago. He was my best friend. No.He didn’t understand me when I was a kid, but he supported my passion for comics and my love of movies and now I wouldn’t be making this movie without him.l,” Gunn wrote. “It’s been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago. I initially said no because I didn’t have a way that felt unique, fun, and emotional that would give Superman the dignity that he deserved.”
The director went on to say that just under a year ago he saw “a way in, in many ways, centered around Superman’s heritage: how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.” .
“Superman: Legacy” is the first film in a universe whose narrative will be branched (presumably one that will be mixed with streaming projects for HBO Max) in a Phase 1 that the studio calls “Gods and Monsters.” The cast has yet to be announced, but the film is dated to its world theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
Gunn and Safran gave the DC Universe a much-needed break last fall when they took control of the comics unit, the intellectual property guarded by Warner Bros. Discovery. In January they presented their new vision to the media and promised to put quality before quantity.
“People have become committed to release dates, to making movies no matter what. I’m a writer at heart and we’re not going to make movies before the script is done,” Gunn said at the time.
However, the long-awaited films of the “pre Gunn and Safran” era have their releases pending. One of the ones that has undergone the most changes is ‘Shazam! The fury of the gods’, which arrives this Friday. ‘Flash’ will arrive on June 23 and for ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ we will have to wait for Christmas.
Besides, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ arrives on May 5, his latest feat within Marvel (You can see the trailer of the film at the beginning of this article).
