Official UK government data shows that the number of homeless people in England has risen by 26% in one year, which is linked to a “rising cost of living crisis”.
Prince William, the heir apparent to the British throne, said his mother, Princess Diana, would be disappointed by the lack of progress on measures to stop homelessness.
He made this statement during a video recorded in an appeal for charitable actions.
In the video, the Prince of Wales spent time with people who are being helped by a homeless charity.
As a child, Prince William was taken by his mother on visits to charities that worked with the homeless, such as The Passage in London.
“My mom introduced me to the cause of homelessness at an early age, and I’m so glad she did,” the prince said in the video.
“I think she would be disappointed that we haven’t made more progress tackling homelessness than when she was involved.”

In the video, Prince William talks to people who have been supported by the Groundswell charity, funded by the NGO Comic Relief.
Among them was Miles, who told the prince: “Being homeless is not having a safe space – it’s a very isolated life. You exist, you don’t live.”
Another person who participated in the video, Nawshin, said: “I had no choice but to leave the house – I had a lot of childhood traumas and circumstances that were beyond my control.”
Prince William is a patron of the homeless charity The Passage. Last month he inaugurated two buildings that will serve 225 people a year.
At the London ceremony in February, she rejected the idea that homelessness was “inevitable,” saying that “ending homelessness should be seen as more than just an ambition. Rather, it should be an attainable goal.”
“I am more determined than ever to do my part by working with others to do everything I can to stop the human tragedy that is homelessness,” the prince said.
