Book sales fell more than 10% in Brazil in February

According to the 2nd Book Retail Panel, the second-period decline was larger in volume; billing was 7.6% lower.

A book sale between January 30 and February 26 it decreased by 12.93% in volume and by 7.61% in turnover – which includes the second period of the year for Book Retail Panel in Brazil. The survey, carried out by Nielsen Book and disseminated by the National Syndicate of Book Publishers (SNEL), compares the current trend with that of the same period in 2022 (from 31/01 to 27/02), when the publishing market was beginning to recover from pandemic recession.

In this second period of 2023, 4.03 million books were sold, which generated revenues of 194.88 million reais. In 2022, 4.63 million copies were sold at the same time, which earned the publishers BRL 210.94 million.

Looking at the cumulative for 2023, the change is also negative compared to the beginning of the previous year. The decrease is 8.82% in volume and 2.34% in turnover. Since the beginning of the year, 9.27 million books have been sold and the turnover has been R$ 458.72 million. In 2022, the numbers were 10.16 million copies and BRL 469.72 million in revenue.

The average price above inflation and bibliodiversity down by almost double digits, in addition to the macroeconomic scenario, are some of the factors highlighted by the survey to explain the performance. “It is still too early to establish a medium-term trend, but it will be essential that the GDP shows signs of sustained growth”, said Dante Cid, president of the National Union of Book Publishers.
