Adiah was born weighing 330 grams and his brother, Adrial, weighing 420 grams. They are the lightest twins ever, according to the Guinness Book of Records.
Pregnant with twins, Shakina Rajendram heard from doctors what every mother fears: their children had a 0% chance of surviving. She went into labor at 21 weeks and 5 days pregnant, about four months earlier than expected. “The children were not viable,” said the first professionals who followed the case.
The only “comfort” offered was to let the newborns spend the first and last minutes of their lives in their mother’s lap after delivery. “We were in shock,” Shakina said Guinness World Record.
When everything seemed ruined, the family received a sign of hope! Before going into the second day of labour, the twins’ mother and father, Kevin Nadarajah, were transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada. a unit specializing in cases of babies born after the 22nd week.
Shakina was admitted to the NICU at 21 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. If babies were born minutes before they reach 22 weeks, they would not receive treatment, as doctors believe there is no chance of survival. Then the best part happened: Water broke 15 minutes after midnight on March 4, 2022.
The birth of the twins lasted 1 hour and a half. The Adiah girl came first and weighed 330 grams. The brother, Adrial, was born 23 minutes later, weighs 420 grams. They are the most premature twins in the world and the lightest ever, according to the Guinness.

One day apart, Adiah and Adrial (born 126 days early) broke the record set by American premature twins Keeley and Kambry Ewoldt (born 125 days early). The most premature baby ever, however, is still Curtis Zy-Keith Means of the United States, who arrived 132 days early, at a gestational age of 21 weeks and 1 day.
The struggle in intensive care
Brothers Adiah and Adrial have been under observation in the hospital for almost six months. โWe have seen children almost die before our eyes many times,โ Shakina said. In addition to facing complications such as brain hemorrhage and intestinal perforation, the children had extremely thin skin, which suffered from extensive scaling.

Adiah was discharged after 161 days and Adrial one week later. Earlier this month, they celebrated their one year anniversary! The duo continue to be monitored by specialists, but are “very well”, according to the family.
