‘How I met your father’: The pros and cons of the new series

The first season is now available on Disney +.

Eight years ago we said goodbye to Ted Mosby and company. The mystery of the series ‘How I met your mother’ was solved. Probably not in the way that many expected, but it was settled. Currently there was a certain emptiness within the sitcom, and the spin-off of the famous series has come to cover. A story for all those romantics and romantics with an entertaining and comic plot.

‘How I met your father’ comes to take over the stories of groups of friends in their thirties looking for their site in new york city. Different people, each with their burdens in their past and who have goals in life. The public will see again how the group solve their problems in this stretch of life that covers more or less the decade of the thirties.

Is now Hillary Duff the protagonist who succeeds Josh Radnor. His Sophie is the protagonist for this new generation. Who will be the father of her child? It is enough for us to know the answer to the question. In the meantime, let’s review the pros and cons of the new series.

      IN FAVOR

      Characters

Duff gives Sophie the sympathy and sweetness necessary to win over the public. But there is not all the potential in it. The team of creators have been able to draw new characters that are very rich in content and background, and without being cartoonish. It also contains more diversity. Valentine (France Raisa), the best friend of the protagonist, is a young Mexican woman looking for an opportunity in the world of fashion, Charlie (Tom Ainsley) has fled his native England, leaving behind a life of comfort to learn to fend for himself in New York, Ellen (Tien Tran), of Asian origin, has ended a relationship and hopes to believe in love again with another girl, Sid (surah sharma) has decided to leave medicine and the path he had pre-established to set up a bar, which was what he really wanted, and Jesse (Chris Lowell) hopes to get over soon that his girlfriend stood him up when he asked her to marry him.

      Your criticism of the present

The first details of the film spoke of reflecting what it was like to find love in times of social networks. The series is faithful to this and knows how to make humor of it, without exaggerating or spreading the gum too much or disturbing. The revision to the projection in networks and applications is well inserted in the plot.

      Learn from mistakes

Its predecessor aged very badly in a very short time. Today when it is reviewed it is clear that despite the originality of the proposal, the plot hid very sexist and racist jokes, and many clichés that seventeen years later cannot be sustained. Here are several examples. The new series follows the scheme of the previous one and adjusts to the present: there is more social awareness and less malevolent jokes.

Adaptation to the new style of fiction

That a season of ‘CCAVM’ lasted 23 chapters could be understood in 2005. At a time when many more proposals are consumed and there are entire seasons at the click of a button, it was logical that this series would reduce its first season to ten episodes. As far as the content is concerned, now it gets even with the fanciful part in which its predecessor was fattened: those impossible Barney costumes, or his excuses, the subplots to thread, etc.

Kim Cattrrall, the great successor of Bob Saget

Kim Cattrall It is the Sophie of the year 2050. Unlike the previous one, it is the protagonist we see, instead of her offspring. Something logical, since seeing the boy would offer clues about the mysterious paternity. The Sophie of the future tells the story of how she met the man who became the father of her child in a video call. Bob Saget, who died last January, was the voice of Ted in 2030. Just by listening to him, he became a fundamental part of the series. Taking over from her wasn’t easy, but Cattrall is fantastic as a narrator.

      Tribute to his predecessor

For the cons that we can get out of ‘How I met your mother’, the production left memorable moments on television: the mystery of the pineapple, the chapter of the goat, the video clips of Robin Sparkles,…. The new series does not forget where it starts from and that is why it offers surprises to the public of the story that we discover with Ted.

      AGAINST

      The shadow of the former

Although we recognize that the previous series has aged very badly, ‘CCAVM’ marked a stage in television and gathered a loyal legion of followers during its nine seasons while we waited to meet “the Mother”. The story starring Sophie carries that slab and she is aware that she can harm him.

      What about the gags?

The jokes in the dialogues do not work, something very serious in the case of a sitcom. Perhaps this is due to the lesson learned from the first: ‘How I Met Your Mother’ was widely criticized for overdoing the stereotypes in its script. That is why now they have gone from being politically correct and the decision works against them. Clearly the lack of humor in a series of this type generates rejection. And the series has very good ingredients to be successful.

      Too many conventions?

Although ‘CCATP’ is better updated and is much more open-minded, it still suffers from exceeding the traditional romanticism based on the search for love and the ideal partner, both in the protagonist and in the secondary ones. It is true that there are ten chapters and that the circumstances of any of them can change.

We will see if in the second season, already confirmed, they solve these flaws and the public is more hooked on Sophie, her colleagues, and of course to discover who is the father of her child.
