‘Shadow and bone’: the end of season 2, explained

What does that tremendous mean? cliffhanger for season 3 of the Netflix series?

Spoilers for ‘Shadow and Bone’ season 2 ahead

‘Shadow and Bone’ has really taken its name to heart in that final episode of season two. There have been shadows and bones galore, but a lot of other things have happened as well. In fact, the second season as a whole is quite full of multiple stories woven through the plots drawn from multiple books at once.

Consequently, it can all be a bit confusing to follow. He Grishaverse it is huge, after all. So that’s where we come in. Join us as we shed some light on the ‘Shadow and Bone’ season two finale. to find out what will come next in the inevitable third season.

The end of season 2 of ‘Shadow and bone’, explained

Alina’s main objective in this second season has been the search for the second and third amplifiers she needed to magnify her powers as a Suncaller and destroy the Shadow forever.

The Sea Whip appeared fairly early on, so her attention was drawn to the Firebird, revealed to be none other than Mal, Alina’s childhood friend, romantic love. Practical, right? Well no, actually, because that means Mal has to die if Alina is to fulfill her destiny and save Ravka.. Very wild, we know, but it’s a show young adults. What are you waiting for?

Once everyone finds out what’s going on, the gang devises a new plan to stop Mal’s heart only briefly using Tamar’s gift. That would give Alina enough time to take down The Shadow and fulfill the prophecy without killing Mal forever. All David needs is a pinch of one of Mal’s bones to make that happen.

Unfortunately, The Dark One expands The Shadow and ambushes them all before the plan can be put into action.. Alina attempts to tap into the power of the Firebird anyway, but an angry Kirigan interrupts and brutally wounds Mal with one of his shadow daggers.

Nina is unable to heal Mal in time, so she asks Alina to kill him and save everyone, since he is dying anyway. Alina declares her love for Mal one last time and then stabs him, creating a huge surge of energy that destroys The Shadow. and all the Volcra inside it too.

However, there is still the evil Kirigan to deal with. Both he and his shadow monsters survive the blast, giving The Dark One some time to gloat over Mal’s death. He then asks Alina to join him one last time, which is kind of silly given how brutal he’s just been to Mal, so of course she refuses.. The shadow monsters then jump out, but when Inej and Zoya help her fight them off, Alina realizes that Kirigan is distracted from her, so she quickly stabs him with the Neshyenyer sword.

With the beautiful Ben Barnes out of the game forever, Alina turns her focus back to Mal. Nina fails to bring him back, but the Suncaller manages by using merzost, which means that he is now tapping into dark shadow magic like Kirigan used to. It’s kind of the opposite of everything she stands for, so that’s not ideal. Oh well, at least Mal is alive and now they can leave together for their happy ending. TRUE? TRUE?

After that great battle, Mal struggles to find his purpose now that he is no longer the Firebird. So, he and Alina decide it’s best to part ways so Mal can set out on a new path as a pirate.. If they get back together one day, it means that their love was real and not just a manifestation of prophecy.

Nikolai gives Mal his special compass before he leaves, and even names him as the new Sturmhond, which is kind of nice of him. The last we see of Mal is him aboard the Volkvolny/Hummingbird with Tamar, Tolya, and Inej on a new quest to find Inej’s family.

However, Genya is not so lucky. Unable to feel David’s heartbeat, he comes to the conclusion that he is dead, which hurts even more when he finds plans for an engagement ring on David’s clothing. On the bright side, Kirigan is still dead, so at least he has that joy. Zoya and Genya light the funeral pyre and then Alina feeds the flames even more to burn her body completely.just to make sure the nearly immortal hottie is gone forever.

That’s not going to be much consolation because something is wrong with Nikolai. After the apparatus mock the future king before his coronation, he suddenly feels a pain in his shoulder. It is the same place where he was wounded during the battle, but it is not an ordinary wound. When Nikolai looks in the mirror, a shadow monster stares back at him, suggesting that the King of Ravka might be becoming one of them..

During the subsequent coronation of Nikolai and Alina, Kaz informs the Ravens of a “lucrative” opportunity revolving around a drug called “jurda parem” that has the power to amplify the powers of the Grisha to untold levels.. The chemist who created it fled once he realized what he had on his hands, but the Fjerdans quickly captured him with the intent of weaponizing the drug for his benefit.

It will be up to the Ravens to prevent that from happening, but they don’t get very far because a fjerdan woman takes jurda parem during the coronation and uses his amplified gifts to make everyone convulse and cough up blood. Brutal and effective.

Although Alina manages to stop her using her powers, it’s still not a happy ending because the magic comes out as dark, rather than light, which means Alina’s power has been corrupted by the merzost she used to save Mal. And worst of all, in the last image of the season, we see her smile when she sees the change in her powers, just like The Dark One used to do…

Showrunner Eric Heisserer said in Collider that he’s always had a “three season plan” for ‘Shadow and Bone,’ so let’s hope Netflix listens and renews the series at least one more time. We need to know what happens next, and because of the deviations in the way this season has adapted, Leigh Bardugo’s books won’t be particularly helpful on that front, unfortunately.

Thus, like everyone in The Shadow, we too are in the shadows for the future of the series. At the very least, let’s hope that Jessie Mei Li finally gets her wish and Alina comes out of the closet like queer the next season.
