‘Worst experience of my life’: Ben Affleck never wants to work at DC again

Last December, Ben Affleck and James Gunn discussed the future of Batman together. If nothing has been leaked about Ben Affleck’s return to The Dark Knight in the upcoming films, the actor and director is interested in making a DC film according to statements from the head of DC Studios.

“We met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct a DC movie and we want him to do it; We just have to find the right project.”

However, in a recent interview The Hollywood ReporterBen Affleck was categorical: he does not want to direct a DC movie. The Oscar-winning director of Argo in 2013 says:

I won’t do anything for Gunn’s DC. Absolutely not. I have nothing against James Gunn. He is a good boy, he will definitely do a good job. I just don’t want to jump in and have to lead like they do. I do not care.

The actor then talks about Zack Snyder’s Justice League, stating that despite the film’s good rating on IMDB (it’s his highest-rated film), the feature film is “Worst experience ever“His life.

“Justice League is the highest-rated movie of my career. Looking back, it’s a hit. All of a sudden they were praising me for the bomb I was in.

I was going to direct Batman, and Justice League made me say, “I’m stepping down. I never want to do this again. I’m not cut out for it.” This is the worst experience I have ever had at a job full of crappy experiences. My heart was broken. (…) It was hard.

And I started drinking too much. I went back to the hotel in London and said to myself: “This is not the life I want. My children are not here, I am miserable.”

You want to go to work and wear something interesting rather than wearing a rubber suit. I’m not complacent at all, but I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t find it satisfying creatively.

Plus, you’re sweaty and tired. And I thought, “I don’t want to be a part of this in any way. And I don’t want to ruin my life anymore.”

Therefore, The Flash should be Ben Affleck’s last appearance in the Batman suit and his final foray into the DC Universe. The actress also claims that she only made a cameo appearance in the film worn by Ezra Miller.

“These stories became somewhat repetitive and less interesting to me. I finally figured out how to play Batman and was successful in The Flash. For the five minutes I’m there, it’s really beautiful.”

Due to hit our theaters on June 14th, The Flash is one of the last films before the new iteration of DC’s old universe, the DCU, helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Lack of creative freedom

Ben Affleck is currently promoting his new achievement Air. Featuring Affleck, his friend Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans and Viola Davis, the featurette chronicles the creation of Nike’s Air Jordan shoe and will be available on Prime Video from April 5.

Air is the first production from Artists Equity, the company Affleck and Damon started to finance film projects with an emphasis on quality and without limiting the filmmaker’s creative control. A freedom that DC Studios can’t provide for the directors of their work…
