In a press conference held this Friday (17), midfielder Lucas Leiva officially retired from the field at the age of 36. The reason for the interruption of his career is due to myocardial fibrosis detected in December last year through pre-season medical visits.




Last Thursday the club had convened the interview to talk about the situation of the now ex-athlete where he avoided giving further details about his future. However, according to backstage information, the mood was already one of pessimism.

– I would like to thank everyone at Grêmio. Today I am here to announce my retirement. I’ve had a lot of hopes these last few months to go back, but at least I managed to finish where I wanted. I have come to give my contribution at a difficult time for the club. Now is the time to look ahead and hope for a brilliant trajectory. Thanks to the other clubs I’ve defended, as a professional and even before Grêmio, within San Paolo – said Lucas.

REMEMBER THE CASE

Hired to star status in July 2022 following the end of his Lazio contract, Lucas Leiva returned to his training club with the baggage of 14 years playing in top-level competition in both Italy and England, a period in which defended Liverpool.

However, the leadership role expected of the Grêmio board of directors was to be exercised more outside than inside the four lines.

With just 18 games and three goals scored, he underwent a medical at the end of last year as Grêmio started pre-season aiming for 2023, a change in the rhythm of his heartbeat was detected, which resulted in the its immediate removal from activities. Since then, he can’t even exercise.
