Women’s ministry repudiates acts of harassment at “BBB 23”: “It’s a crime”

The Ministry of Women has released a note of repudiation of the acts of harassment and sexual harassment that took place at the “BBB 23” in the early hours of Thursday (16/3), culminating in the expulsion of the fighter Antônio Cara de Sapato and the singer MC Guime . The two were seen harassing Mexican Dania Mendez during a party on the Globo reality show and ended up being dropped from the program the following night.

In the note, the Ministry stressed that violence against women is not “fun” and highlighted that, since 2018, sexual harassment has been a crime in Brazil.

“The incident of sexual harassment in the reality show with the highest ratings in Brazil is not an isolated case. The expulsion of the defendants is necessary, but we are far from adequate treatment for these cases. We need to go further so that women do not feel never guilty for the violence suffered”, reads the text.

“We can no longer allow cases of harassment and sexual harassment to continue to occur in the country. Violence against women is not entertainment. Whether it is at home, on the street or at work, every woman has the right to feel safe and respected: respect is a non-negotiable value.

Since 2018, sexual harassment has been a crime in Brazil and it is up to the authorities to deal with it in accordance with the law: to make the aggressors responsible and, above all, never to blame the victims, who must be welcomed and supported.

The sexual harassment incident on Brazil’s top-rated reality show is not an isolated case. The expulsion of the defendant is necessary, but we are far from adequate treatment for these cases. It is necessary to go further so that women never feel guilty for the violence they have suffered.

In a government that respects all women, we will continue to work to strengthen the network of services for women victims of violence and to build prevention actions and campaigns. The fight against violence against women is an urgent political struggle that also permeates the awareness of the media and entertainment about the symbolic violence they can reproduce”.
