This 90’s sci-fi movie is the most accurate according to NASA, and it’s now being turned into a TV series

In 2011, NASA named Welcome to Gattaca as “the most compelling science fiction film in the history of cinema”. The feature film, which did not enjoy the expected success upon release, but still received an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score, has since become a cult classic.

Twenty-six years later, the world of Gattaca is set to return to the small screen this time: a series from Homeland creators Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa for Showtime, as our colleagues at SensaCine report. .

back to the Future

1997 saw the release of Welcome to Gattaca, Andrew Niccol’s first film, before co-writing The Truman Show (1998) with Jim Carrey, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award.

The film, starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law, plunged us into a near future where science and humanity had developed to the point where the latter could direct its own evolution. Genetic engineering has effectively created a world in which parents can determine the future of their children before they are born, which by default has created a new underclass that is no longer defined by social status or the color of its skin. As companies test their employees based on their genetic make-up, Vincent (Ethan Hawkes), an ordinary man with a congenital heart disease, tries to give birth to the perfect specimen Jerome (Jude Law) in order to fulfill his dream of space travel.

The idea that in the near future man will be able to completely control a person’s genetic imprint, which NASA has deemed possible, is therefore renewed in a barely announced “gataka”. series. Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa will serve as executive producers along with Glenn Gellar and Danny DeVito, who also produced the 1997 film. Details are unconfirmed as the project, which includes Sony Pictures Television, is pending completion.
