Taking care of elderly parents and their children. This is the dilemma of the Sandwich Generation, which is “crammed” between these two fundamental issues. The question here is: how to emerge unscathed from this “sandwich”?

The fact is that usually this double task is entrusted to the women of the family. And this can cause physical and mental exhaustion, as well as family relationship problems.

An important work meeting, your child’s presentation at school, and a doctor’s appointment for your parents; don’t forget to pay the bill – all in the same day – without forgetting to hydrate yourself and, if possible, get some sleep.

The origin of this term

The term “sandwich generation” was coined by social worker Dorothy A. Miller in 1981 to describe the adult children of older people who are “squished” between caring for their own children and that of their aging parents. This group is subject to unique challenges and stresses, but can also benefit from strong multigenerational bonds.

The expression is best known in the United States and Europe, but is gaining strength in Brazil – influenced by the average increase in life expectancy in the country, which is about 77 years (IBGE 2019) ―, together with subsequent pregnancy.

Furthermore, women, who previously assumed full responsibility for caring for family members, are gaining space in the labor market and a balance is needed in this whole routine.

“It is necessary to share responsibilities with the family, as it is a very demanding phase of our lives,” warns Márcia Sena, founder and CEO of Senior goalkeeper.
