Italy and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a declaration of intent last Friday (18) to strengthen collaboration with the aim of ensuring the success of COP28 on climate change.
The event will be held from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in the United Arab Emirates. The agreement was signed by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani.
“A text that highlights many possible connections between the countries of the important axis that represents the next Conference of the Parties”, declared the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto.
The agreement, reads a note, “recognizes the importance of global action to address the challenge of climate change” and believes “it is urgent to accelerate efforts to achieve the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement, among which targets zero emissions by 2050”.
The joint act highlights “the importance of the first ‘Global Balance’ to monitor progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the commitment to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the climate finance and the need to orient energy systems towards renewable sources”.
According to the statement, both countries also recognized “the importance of working together to enhance global resilience and support adaptation”.
The agreement also underlines “the importance of finding solutions for food and water security, health and the protection of natural ecosystems”.
Ahead of COP28, both nations will continue to engage in “new forms of finance, such as the fund to help developing countries particularly vulnerable to loss and damage, essential to the collective goal of increasing climate finance, as well as for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goalsâ.
Finally, the declaration “recognizes and applauds the efforts of young people from all over the world in the fight against the climate crisis and reaffirms the will to strengthen their participation in COP28, building on the results achieved by the Youth4Climate initiative”.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 or Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, better known as COP28, will take place from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Expo City, Dubai. .
