From the age of 8

Cartographer and linguist Milo James Thatch has the same dream as his grandfather: to discover the mysterious lost city of Atlantis.

One day, when an eccentric billionaire pays him a surprise visit and reveals to him that he has all of his grandfather’s precious information about the location of this vanished kingdom, the young scientist passes on the opportunity and decides to board a huge submarine. Soon they will dive in search of Atlantis. During the expedition, Milo and his teammates will face many dangers…

The 2000s, as we know, were not particularly easy times for Disney studios. After the memorable golden age of the 90s and right before it started to make a comeback with movies like Rapunzel or Wreck-It Ralph, the famous company had a series of uncomfortable successes, sometimes even real box office failures.

However, some of the feature films of this decade deserved a little more recognition. This is the case of Atlantis, the Lost Empire, released in 2001 and directed by Gary Truesdale and Kirk Wise: the most outstanding duo, as the two directors had already signed Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Released at the end of the year and likely with two real bathrooms at the box office – the first installment of The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter saga – the new Disney still had many features. Take for example its spectacular opening sequence, its exceptionally rich and inventive visual world, its engaging characters and its highly inspired soundtrack composed by the excellent James Newton Howard.

In short, Atlantis is a quality Disney ride that we encourage you to try as a family.

What will you like…

  • Action sequences, truly spectacular. If the use of synthetic images in a feature film can often be dangerous in traditional animation, it is very convincing here and blends well with the rest of the film.

  • The voice of the beloved hero of the film, Milo Tech, is none other than the voice of Michael J. Fox! As in Back to the Future, it’s the excellent Luke Hammett who doubles as the French version. The VF voice cast also includes Laura Blanc (Kida), Jean Reno, Mouss Diouf and Patrick Timsit.

What could be bothering them…

  • A monstrous leviathan, a giant underwater creature that sets off in pursuit of the heroes at the beginning of the film.
  • Some of the subtleties of the story that, without concern, may eventually lose the youngest viewers or escape their interest.
