Tonight on TV: One of the most heartbreaking dramas ever made

In 1977, La Dentellière introduced Isabelle Huppert to the general public. With this adaptation of Pascal Laine’s novel of the same name, the actress, who was only 24 years old, saw her career take off, being crowned BAFTA for Best Female Hope and David Di Donatello for Best Foreign Actor.

At the same time, the feature film will be nominated for the Palme d’Or, allowing its director, Claude Goretta, to win the World Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. This will be his greatest success.

La Dentellière is Pomme, whose real name is Beatrice, an introverted and silent 19-year-old young woman, apprenticed in a hairdressing salon run by her friend and boss, the fun-loving Marilyn.

When the latter takes Pomme to Cabourg on holiday, he meets Françoise, a young student, as cultured and shy as him: it’s love at first sight. Returning to Paris, they settled together.

But while François comes from a wealthy background and Pom from the opposite, their social differences keep them apart. Apple’s life changes and a young woman closes in her silence…

A little-known masterpiece of French cinema, La Dentellière is melancholy, tender and moving, but above all tragic and painful. A thoughtful film, it reaches into the heart of the audience with subtlety, but excites like never before. The love story is heartbreaking and yet full of charm.

With her masterful performance, Isabelle Huppert then moved France: A Star Is Born. After forty-six, to be precise, the emotion is intact.
