Amazon CEO, Andy Jassyannounced this Monday (20), that it will lay off another 9,000 employees, in a second round of cuts at the company.
At the end of last year, in November, Amazon expected to lay off about 10,000 employees. However, earlier this year Jassy confirmed the company would cut at least 18,000.
With this new announcement, at least 30,000 people have been made redundant by the company in just three months. “Since we just completed Phase 2 of our operational plan last week, I’m writing to share that we plan to drop approximately 9,000 more positions in the coming weeks, primarily across AWS, PXT, Ads, and Twitch”said Andy Jassy this Monday.
Like other big tech companies, Amazon said the headcount overhaul is motivated by economic instability: “Given the uncertain economy we reside in and the uncertainty that exists for the foreseeable future, we have chosen to be leaner in our costs and headcount.”
In recent months, Meta, Twitter, Microsoft and Alphabet (Google), among other tech giants, have also announced significant cuts. Last week, the executive chairman of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, said another 10,000 employees would be cut and also announced a freeze on open positions. The Facebook owner had already laid off 11,000 employees in November 2022.
