Swarm: Billie Eilish’s bizarre character in the Prime Video series is inspired by a real cult leader

Inspired by the “Beyoncé case”, the production of seven episodes is complete in streaming.

A few days ago, Prime Video received a new original production. Dominating social media over the weekend, Swarm is developed by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, both producers based in Atlanta.

The plot accompanies Dre (Dominique Fishback), a young fanatic of pop star Ni’jah, played by singer Nirine S. Brown. The girl’s obstinacy ends up leading to irreversible decisions and totally obscure consequences.

With a narrative inspired by the “Beyoncé case”, the storyline has several special appearances. Between appearances by Rory Culkin and Paris Jackson, one of the most talked about cast guests is Billie Eilish. The Grammy winner suddenly appears in chapter four, “Running Afraid.”

When trying to find his diva, the protagonist goes to the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. There he meets a mysterious group formed only by women and its leader, Eva, played by the artist responsible for the record. Happier than ever.

Billie was cast by Swarm casting director Carmen Cuba.” When she showed up [Billie Eilish] for the role of Eva, we were like, ‘Oh, she’s so amazing! Here we are!’ And she worked, ”Nabers said. She was amazing!

In the storyline, Eva says she is in awe of Dre and tries to include her in the group. As the days go by, Dominique’s character begins to realize that all of the women present have the same brand, as well as act and dress the same. Eventually, she becomes involved in the tribe’s handover ceremony of “female empowerment”.

This community is inspired by the NXIVM cult, which involved actress Allison Mack, who is currently in prison. According to producer Nabers, the role of Eilish was based on the leader of this group, Keith Raniere, who was sentenced to 120 years in prison and fined US$1,750,000 for sex trafficking.

Founded in 1998, while the group was billed as a “community driven by humanitarian principles that seeks to empower people,” it was a cult of extreme control that culminated in sexual abuse, rape and branding on the bodies of the women involved.

“There is a cult that existed in the world that was very important at the time [2018]”said the producer al The Hollywood Reporter. “And that’s the real crime element of this episode. And I think when people think about the idea of artists or celebrities, there’s this idea of thinking about the cult of Taylor Swift, or the cult of the Beatles or whatever. That what we really cared about was seeing someone worship at the altar of “something” ed[esplorare]that idea of what the cult of the mind is.”

The actress who brings Dre to life addressed the backstage of the episode in question. She says the singer was “respectful of the craft” and “came in with ideas, wanting to talk about it, being game to play.”

With seven episodes, the first season is complete in the Prime Video catalog.
