ChatGPT at the Oscars? AI can write for Hollywood

Hollywood screenwriters could use ChatGPT to help with story writing. But with one condition: the use of the tool did not evaluate the merits of the authors. This is the proposal defended by the trade union, according to three sources interviewed by Variety.

This type of movement takes place in the midst of apprehension among professionals in the category. With the arrival of the OpenAI chatbot on the market, together with the diffusion of tools of this type, the classic fear that AI (artificial intelligence) was “stealing” jobs from humans began to spread.

Where would ChatGPT come into play

In practice, the union proposes that screenwriters use ChatGPT to help write their texts without sharing the writing credit. That is, the OpenAI chatbot would be just a tool.

Another possibility covered by the proposal: a studio could give the professional an AI-generated script for him to rewrite or make improvements. In this case, the writer would still be credited as the primary author of the work.

Furthermore, the proposal does not cover the scenario where an AI program writes a script entirely by itself, without human help.

Facade of the Hollywood Writers' Union

The union’s proposal was discussed during the first negotiating session with the AMPTP (English acronym for “Alliance of Film and Television Producers”, in free translation), held on Monday (20). But it’s unclear whether the Alliance, which represents Hollywood studios, will go along with it.

The union argues that AI-generated material should not be considered “literary material” or “source material”. These terms are critical to the awarding of writing credits.

“Literary material”, in union terms, is what a writer produces (stories, treatments, screenplays, dialogues, sketches, etc.). If an AI program can’t produce “literary material,” it can’t be considered a writer on a project.

The term “source material” refers to novels, plays, and magazine articles upon which a screenplay may be based. If a screenplay is based on original material, it is not considered an “original screenplay”. The writer may also only receive a “script by” credit instead of a “written by” credit.
