What is JA Bayona preparing? We tell you everything we know about his new project, which is based on a true story.
JA Bayonne, one of our most international directors, is preparing his fifth film as a director. In between the previous one and this one there have been other powerful commissions (remember the Amazon Prime Video series, ‘The Rings of Power’). On this occasion, he adapts a book that narrates one of the stories that most attracted the attention of the 20th century.. And we have also seen it before in the cinema. It is about the feat experienced by the members of the rugby group and their other travel companions on that flight 571 of the Uruguayan Air Force in 1972. An accident left the passengers in the Andes. There began 72 hard days of survival.
As I collected PHOTOGRAMS last year during the visit to the filming of ‘The Snow Society’, Belén Atienza and Sandra Hermida are once again behind the production prepared by the Barcelonan. Netflix is in charge of supporting this production, which is why it has become one of the most illustrious titles on our list of the most anticipated movies of 2023 on Netflix. What do we know about her?
‘The Snow Society’: Release date
Netflix has not yet announced the release date of Bayonne’s ‘The Snow Society’, but it is expected to arrive throughout this 2023.
‘The Snow Society’: Production
Netflix has taken the story of the Andes to the Sierra Nevada. Belén Atienza (‘The Impossible’, ‘The Orphanage’) and Sandra Hermida (‘The Impossible’, ‘A Monster Comes to See Me’), the film’s producers, assure that the giant streaming he was involved from the first minute with the project, which is shot entirely in Spanish. The same thing happened with Cetursa Sierra Nevada, which got involved offering the possibility of filming in the ski resort during the winter season.
Telling this story was a pending job for Bayona for more than a decade. “It was during the documentation process for ‘The Impossible’ when I discovered ‘The Snow Society’, Pablo Vierci’s fascinating chronicle of the tragedy of the Andes. More than ten years later, my fascination with the novel remains intact” , assured the filmmaker, who was happy to face the challenge of “telling one of the most remembered events of the 20th century, with all the complexity that a story implies that gives as much relevance to the survivors as to those who never returned from the mountain”.
‘The Snow Society’: Synopsis
The director adapts the novel by Pablo Vierci. He doesn’t do it alone, but the script has been cooked by eight hands: Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marqués and Nicolás Casariego They have also worked to bring this story to the big screen. After 14 years without filming in Spanish, Bayona returns with a cast of young Uruguayan and Argentine actors to direct in his mother tongue.
“It is one of the most remembered events of the 20th century”, collected the filmmaker during the visit to the filming. And is not for less. A story of this caliber had to be brought back to the big screen: the harsh and incomparable experience of those survivors of that flight.
According to Vierci’s synopsis, this is andThe definitive book on the most incredible story ever told. “If it were fiction, it would be implausible.” In the book, all the survivors speak for the first time since that plane crash that found them in their twenties in the Andes, four thousand meters above sea level, thirty degrees below zero, without shelter or food. The Uruguayan writer accompanied a group of survivors with his children to the mountains. Each of the sixteen remembers firsthand what the seventy-two days in the mountains were like, how they overcame that extreme situation, how they understood death, what the accident meant and how it influenced their later life.. Vierci, who was a schoolmate of the survivors, began writing this book in 1973, one of the reasons for the precision of the work, for the moments before the accident, survival in the mountains, the avalanche that killed eight friends , the decision to feed on the bodies of the companions, the expedition in search of help, the days after the rescue and the life that followed…
The accident broke the lives of those young people, the novel brought together the sixteen, with the perspective of time elapsed, so that they leave their testimonies in history.
‘The Snow Society’: Cast
Unlike the film directed by Frank Marshall thirty years ago, the cast that leads Bayona is not as popular. and for the vast majority this is their first blockbuster. The choral cast is made up of young Argentine and Uruguayan actors: Enzo Vogincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomas Wolf, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Rafael Federman, Felipe González Otaño, Agustín Della Corte, Valentino Alonso, Simón Hempe, Fernando Contigiani, Benjamín Segura, Luciano Chatton, Agustín Berruti, Juan Caruso, Rocco Posca, Andy Pruss and Esteban Bigliardi. They are in charge of giving life to the characters who lived that experience in the middle of the snow.
‘The Snow Society’: Images
For now we have the image that shows us the plane shattered in the middle of the snow. That and that of the filmmaker are the two already emblematic graphic samples of the production.

‘The Snow Society’: Trailer
For now Netflix has not shown any clip or preview of the story. What there is are videos on social networks that some of the actors have shared.
