Italy signs decrees on insect meal labels

The label will report the origin of the product and the risks associated with consumption

The Italian Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, informed this Thursday (23) that he has signed four new decrees on the labels that will appear on insect meal packages in the country.

In addition to Lollobrigida, the decrees were also approved by the ministers of Made in Italy and Health, respectively Adolfo Urso and Orazio Schillaci. Politicians have provided more information on product labels.

“The decrees provide for a label that shows the origin of the product, the risks associated with consumption and the quantity of insect meal, but also where they can be displayed inside the establishments, especially for those who want to choose between crickets, larvae and grasshoppers. those who don’t want to, as I imagine most Italians, can stay away from them”, explained Lollobrigida.

The European Union has recently allowed the marketing of powdered, frozen or dried cricket flour, as well as the sale of larvae (Alphitobius diaperinus) and migratory locusts (Locusta migratoria).

The first insect to be approved as a novel food by EU Member States was the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), in dried form only, in June 2021.

“We will monitor full compliance with the measures both as regards the ban on the use of insect flours in foods typical of the Mediterranean diet such as pizza and pasta, and as regards compliance with the labeling of products, which must be visible and clear” , Schillaci reported. .
