Is Stallone ready to give a sequel to one of his best films?

Cliffhanger: Hunt for the Top hit the big screen on October 6, 1993 and brought the wild beast back to Sylvester Stallone’s career. The latter recently experienced several consecutive flops The mess is in the bag, Stop or my mother will shoot or Demolition Man.

With $255 million worldwide (on a $75 million budget), Renny Harlin’s film is a huge success. In France, it attracts 2.6 million viewers. At the time, a sequel was being considered by TriStar Pictures.

The project even has a title: Cliffhanger: The Dam. After traveling through the Rocky Mountains in the first film, Gabe Walker (Stallone) had to confront terrorists who had taken control of the Hoover Dam on the Arizona-Nevada border.

The company will not go further in the first stage of development. In 2008, the dam will come out of the drawer for a new attempt. This will not work either. The following year, StudioCanal announced that Cliffhanger 2 had returned to Neil H. with Moritz.

Unfortunately, this new test will remain a dead letter. After 4 years, we learn that Joe Gazami (the future screenwriter of the TV series The Equalizer) will write a new version of the script. But history repeats itself and the project returns to the bottom of the drawer.

In May 2015, Stallone posted a photo of the cliffhanger on Instagram, stating that he would love to make a sequel. “Even if the first opus is his most dangerous project.”

4 years later, in 2019, a female reboot was announced to be directed by Anna Lily Amirpour and written by Sasha Penn. There was even talk of Jason Momoa playing in it. Rebelote, this company will not go further than the first stage of development.

On April 13, 2021, Stallone teased fans by reposting the cliffhanger photo with this comment: “Hang on! Something huge could happen (this is not a sequel).”

What did the actor mean? We haven’t had any news about the project around Cliffhanger. what did he mean TV series in the same universe as the movie?

A prequel with a young Gab Walker? We’ll probably never know. Either way, a cliffhanger sequel isn’t on the cards. Meanwhile, you can find Stallone on Paramount+ at Tulsa King.
