China, US Navy discuss US warship in Chinese waters

China’s defense ministry said on Friday it had once again had to monitor and fend off the US warship USS Milius as it entered its territorial waters in the South China Sea near the Paracel Islands.

“We strongly request that the United States immediately stop such provocative acts, otherwise it will suffer the serious consequences of unforeseen incidents,” a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement.

The US Navy said the missile destroyer is asserting its rights and freedoms of navigation.

“The illegal and widespread maritime claims in the South China Sea pose a serious threat to the freedom of the seas, including the freedoms of navigation and overflight, free trade and unfettered trade, and freedom of economic opportunity for coastal nations in the China Sea Southern.”, the US Navy’s 7th Fleet said in a statement.

US forces operate daily in the South China Sea, the US Navy said.

This was the second consecutive day of standoff between the two superpowers amid rising tensions in the region.

China claims large swathes of the region that overlap with the exclusive economic zones of several countries, including the Philippines. Trillions of dollars in trade flow through the area each year.
