Lula feels good, motivated; the trip to China is confirmed, says Pimenta

The minister of the Social Communications Secretariat (Secom), Paulo Pimenta, said on Friday 24 that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva feels good, available and “very motivated”. He confirms that the CEO’s trip to China is scheduled for next Sunday, the 26th, and that the agenda will remain entirely in the Asian country. Previously, the press office of the presidency had announced, in a note, that the trip to the Asian country, previously scheduled for Saturday 25, had been postponed due to the health conditions of Lula, diagnosed yesterday evening with mild pneumonia.

According to Pimenta, despite his health conditions, Lula insisted on holding the meeting with ministers and heads of government at the Alvorada Palace, held this afternoon. Initially, the Presidency’s advisory board had confirmed the suspension of the agenda. According to Minister Secom, the meeting was to be “scheduled” for next week, when Lula will be away.

“This week has been a very large agenda, it ends up causing physical fatigue, it lowers immunity,” he stressed. “Since he will be away for many days, it is absolutely normal to talk a little to organize the week,” said Pimenta. “For us it was more important to see the availability, the rapid recovery. Tomorrow the president will rest all day, taking the necessary medicines, to go to China on Sunday”, he underlined.

Despite saying the CEO is fine, the minister said Lula will rest with the necessary medicines. However, the schedule of the president’s flight on Sunday has not yet been defined and, according to him, the trip would have been authorized by the president’s doctor, Roberto Kalil, who made an assessment this morning. Pimenta said Lula doesn’t need a new medical evaluation before leaving.

“Any of us with a heavy agenda like Lula’s should take a break like he did,” the minister reassured. When asked about the hip pain the president had been experiencing, Pimenta said it was an “outdated” topic.

One of the topics covered during the meeting will be the elaboration of Provisional Measures (MP) at the Congress. However, Pimenta stressed that this is a “fundamental” issue for the legislative chambers. “We are interested in a greater balance between the chambers,” he commented. According to the Minister of the General Secretariat, Marcio Macedo, it would be important for the Chief Executive to meet, in person, before the trip, with the Speaker of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), since he will not be in the presidential entourage during the trip in China.
