Strength, weight loss, stretching: what are the benefits of each practice
Exercise habits have become increasingly important, especially for health. Of course, we also want aesthetic results, but come with me: isn’t it delightful to improve posture, catch more breath and have more strength?
Gone are the days when bodybuilding was the only practical option. You’ve definitely heard of crossfit. The modality has grown in Brazil and it is common to see people running in the street, climbing ropes, lifting tires…. Oh my, I’m already tired!
On the other hand, there are still those who do not leave aside their favorite series in the gym. Training legs, triceps and buttocks has become a routine for most Brazilians.
Were you in doubt between practicing bodybuilding and trying crossfit? We help you.
Do you want to lose weight or gain strength?
Henrique Morais, physical education and bodybuilding and crossfit instructor, explains that to choose the ideal modality, you must first know what your goal is: losing weight, gaining strength, defining muscles, improving mobility and quality of life are just a few . “Bodybuilding is great for gaining muscle mass, preparing for physical conditioning, but it’s a type of training that has its drawbacks, especially in relation to motor coordination,” he warns.
The ‘cross’, according to the professional, tends to scare many beginners, especially when it comes to injuries. Yes, there is the fear of getting hurt, and that’s what can happen – warns Henrique, who believes that “risk is present in every sport”.
“The choice of mode depends a lot on taste and goal. Crossfit is great for those who are very electric, because it is an activity that does not take breaks and is high in calories. In bodybuilding, there are breaks between sets, aiming for hypertrophy (increase in muscle mass). The ideal is to try a little of both,” he argues.
Can you do both at the same time?
The instructor gives an extra tip for those who have never done any of the activities: try three months of pilates. The practice helps prepare the body and create a rhythm to get out of the sedentary life and try something different.
“It can be done, but ideally there should be the same teacher for both (crossfit and bodybuilding), or at least there should be a consensus between the two professionals. It’s not nice to do it on the same day, being able to alternate the two activities ”, she points out.
But the teacher warns that he doesn’t see the need to do crossfit and bodybuilding at the same time, as the two practices are very comprehensive. “You have to be careful not to overload your system and cause damage,” she warns.

Living from the experience
Determined to finally put the “fitness project” into practice, I followed an experimental CrossFit course and my idea was to get out of inertia a bit and understand the limits of my body.
I was going through a sedentary period, so you can imagine it wasn’t easy. In class we started with a moment of stretching on a mat and until then I was super happy.
When we actually started the exercises, I regretted it for a few seconds. Sure, the instructor lifted me, but I still jumped rope, did a kettlebell swing (video below), did squats and weightlifting, and the most painful part of the workout: Pull Ups, a kind of push-up. up on a fixed bar.
I also ended up trying weight training and yoga, which became favorite activities for my routine. While yoga brings the concentration I need, I don’t think it’s easy, see? Understanding how far my body goes has been a once in a lifetime experience, but let’s save that conversation for another day.
