Buzz on Netflix: Psychological thriller ending explained

A Belgian film shot in Flemish, Noise is a feature film that deals with a mystery. We follow influential Matthias (Vard Keremans) who becomes embroiled in a family secret when he returns to the family home to live with his partner Liv (Sally Harmsen) and their newborn baby.

He learns from his father, Paul (Johan Leisen), that a few years ago a mysterious accident occurred in the factory that his father ran, which is now disused. Mathias then embarks on a disturbing investigation that leads him to struggle with terrifying memories of his own past.

A true psychological thriller, Noise leaves many questions unanswered at its conclusion, even if it provides enough elements for an almost definitive interpretation.

What should we understand in the end?

At the end of the film, Mathias sank into a real neurosis and seemed to lose his footing completely. He starts digging in the basement of his house, thinking he will find the missing bodies there. factories. After speaking with Paul, Liv goes home, afraid to lose her son Julius, just as Paul lost his wife Michelle, lest Mathias try to do the same. In particular, suicide.

Arriving home, Liv found Julius in excellent shape. But while digging the ground in the basement, Mathias hit a pipe, as a result of which the basement was flooded. Liv tries to convince Mathias to come out, but to no avail.

Fortunately for him, Paul goes down to the basement, as if something had drawn him directly there. He finds Mathias and Liv struggling to get out of this watery hole. Paul helps Liv first. He then helps Mathias while pictures of his wife Michelle drowned decades ago. And he could not save.

Fortunately for Paul, he manages to save his son and his companion this time. And when Liv wakes up the next day, she finds Mattia in front of the lake. His face remains somewhat vulnerable and enigmatic, but is decidedly calmer than his earlier days.

The noise therefore ends on a rather mysterious note, as does its plot. While for most of the film the plot seems to revolve around the mysterious factory incident, it quickly veers away from Matthias’ mental health issues. At the end of the film, the secret of the factory is only a breaking point for Mathias, who suffered a troubled childhood due to his mother’s suicide.

From the opening scenes of the film, Mathias’ fascination with online stars is quickly established. It becomes clear that Mathias receives a sense of validation from his followers. For a man neglected by his father, this affirmation becomes his driving force. However, as he digs deeper into the investigation, the horrors of his childhood come flooding back.

Ultimately, the outcome of Matthias’ investigation is unclear. It is possible that his delusions fueled his suspicions, as his investigation began with the testimony of his father, who was not in the best of shape and spirit. The man is clearly suffering from the onset of dementia.

Considering the effect the loss of Michelle would have had on Paul, it also becomes highly doubtful that he played any part in the tragedy that befell the factory as he claims. It’s possible that the film dropped the investigative angle at the end, meaning that most of it supported Matthias’ mental health anyway.

This makes all of Mathias’s conclusions rather questionable. The only silver lining in Noise’s confusing ending is that Paul was once again able to save his son, and this time he doesn’t regret it.
