SPOILER ALERT! This article will reveal the plot elements of The Night Agent. If you haven’t seen it, don’t read it.
Available on Netflix since March 23, Night Agent is a hit on the platform. Based on Matthew Quirk’s novel of the same name, the thriller series stars Gabriel Basso as FBI agent Peter Sutherland. The plot begins when he receives a phone call that implicates him in the plot.
in the interview DeadlineSean Ryan was asked about the possibility of a Season 2. A tough question considering there is no book sequel the series could rely on.
Sean Ryan gives an unequivocal answer, explaining that the writing team won’t start thinking about a second season until the conspiracy drama is officially renewed by Netflix.
But as he expands on his answer, he details some potential insights and important questions that need to be answered:
“Look, until a second season is planned, the writers and I don’t get paid to think until it’s official one way or the other. Of course, I have some ideas, but I prefer to keep them to myself until the time is right.
What I can tell you is that the initial pitch for this series that we sold to Netflix was that each season would tell its own largely self-contained story with a beginning, middle, and end. And that the next seasons will include some of the characters, but not most of what we saw in the previous season.
That was the original plan. I think it’s still a pretty solid plan. It was important to me. I don’t want to tell this particular story in five seasons, I want to tell it in one season and give the audience the satisfaction of seeing how things unfold. They learn the truth about Peter’s father, the nature of the conspiracy. One can experience a sense of accomplishment.
If we’re successful enough that Netflix wants more seasons, I think there will be a whole new world where you’ll see a limited number of characters from the current season. But I would have to sit down with the writers and fix everything.
I really like the questions that have to be answered: What does it mean that Peter is a night agent? where will it go Now that Rose returns to California to try and restart her career in tech, where are Peter and Rose?
I think those are all questions that we definitely want to answer in a possible second season, and I hope we get the chance to do so.“
In the crowd of conspiracy thrillers that regularly land on Netflix and other streaming platforms, Night Agent stands out from the crowd thanks to positive feedback from subscribers.
Since the series started on March 23, it has not yet had a chance to gain weekly ratings. But if the performances of other thriller series like The Recruit are to be believed, it’s possible that Night Agent will follow a similar trajectory and spend several weeks in the top 10.
If Night Agent achieves the same performance, it is clear that season 2 will be formalized. But until that can be proven, the show needs to convert its positive feedback into consistent viewership. Given the popularity of thrillers, this shouldn’t be a difficult hurdle to overcome.
