The third season of The White Lotus will take place in Thailand. After setting the first season in Hawaii, an archipelago that is part of the United States, and the second in the Italian region of Sicily, in Europe, the HBO series is now heading to Asia.
The information was exclusively revealed by the Varietywhich claims HBO declined to comment on the production.
The first two seasons of Mike White’s series were taped at the Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii and Italy, respectively. It’s possible that Season 3 will take place in one of the luxury hotel chain’s four properties in Thailand, located in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and the Golden Triangle.
Thailand’s Four Seasons resorts are scattered across the city, countryside, jungle and beach, offering a variety of scenery options for The White Lotusif the production chooses to do so.
White has already hinted that season 3 could take place in Asia and focus on “Eastern death, religion and spirituality.”
“Season 1 was all about money, and season 2 was about sex,” White said in a clip attached to the season 2 finale. “I think Season 3 could be a satirical and humorous take on Eastern death, religion, and spirituality. It looks like it could be a rich tapestry for another round The White Lotus.”
Production on season 3 has yet to begin and White is said to be spending time in Thailand location scouting. Casting details are yet to be announced, but as season 2 introduced an all-new cast, it’s safe to assume there will be plenty of new faces vacationing in Asia.
The first season of The White Lotus won 10 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Miniseries or Anthology and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Jennifer Coolidge, who reprized her role as Tanya McQuoid in the second season, set in Sicily.
This year, Coolidge won a Golden Globe for its second season, and The White Lotus it also took home the award for Outstanding Limited Series, Anthology or Television Film. The series also won two awards at the SAG Awards, for Best TV Drama Ensemble and for Coolidge’s performance.
The first two seasons of The White Lotus are available on HBO Max.
