When asked what his favorite scene was from the 2012 film Men in Black III, Will Smith quoted from David Lean’s 1957 classic:
“I love the final scene of ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’He trusted.
Adapted from a novel by French writer Pierre Boulle – also known for his writing planet of the apes – This famous war film, often cited in AFI lists, follows the adventures of an English regiment captured by the Japanese army and held in a prison camp in the middle of the Burmese jungle during World War II.
Tasked with building a bridge to be used for a strategic convoy, the prisoners spend the entire feature film constructing the building under the command of Colonel Nicholson.
The climax of the film occurs when the train finally passes and the bridge is blown up after being sabotaged by an American commando, the detonator being operated by Colonel Nicholson himself, after fighting Japanese troops.
As epic and symbolic as it is deep and challenging for the characters, the sequence—which required the destruction of an actual set—is the climax of the entire film (even if it differs from the conclusion found in the original work).
“I don’t know what makes me love this moment so much, but it’s a perfect combination of all the elements that come together in the movie”– says Will Smith.
“The train arrives, the bomb is on the ground, the elements finally fit together. Alec Guinness is perfect in that last moment, choosing the hat… when I’m nearing the end of one of my films, when my character has to be shot. It’s a crucial decision, this scene inspires me because it’s perfect .”
With an average rating of 4,092 out of 5 from AlloCiné viewers, The Bridge on the River Kwai won 7 statues (including Best Picture) at the 30th Academy Awards.
