Experience Barcelona’s “new home” during the Camp Nou renovations


The Blaugrana team will remain without a stadium until November 2024

The Olympic Stadium is officially called Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, after a Catalan politician who led the fight for the government of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. The stadium has a capacity of 56,000 and belongs to Barcelona City Council, but was home to Barça’s local rivals Espanyol for around 10 years. It is the sixth largest stadium in the country and will receive an investment of around 20 million euros from Barcelona for repairs and adaptations.

ALMOST CENTENARY

The Montjuïc Olympic Stadium was built in 1927, for the International Exposition held in Spain two years later. It was designed by Pere Domènech i Roura and had a capacity of 62,000, second only to Wembley in terms of capacity in Europe when completed. The first match played at the stadium was between the Catalan national team and Bolton, England, which the hosts won 4-0 in 1929.

After a few years of hosting finals and major events, the Olímpico was left unused in the 1970s and ended up deteriorating, having been refurbished by Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti for the 1992 Olympics. Brazil for Italy at the 1982 World Cup -, the stadium ended up becoming Espanyol’s new home until 2009, when the construction of Cornellà El Prat, until today the Parrocchetti’s home, was completed.

IMPORTANT EVENTS

Olímpico has hosted great matches in the history of Spanish football, with fond memories for Barcelona. Nine Copa del Rey finals have been played in Montjuïc, eight between 1930 and 1957 and one in 2004, with the Blaugrana club winning the 1957 edition over rivals Espanyol 1-0.

The selection of Spain he also played matches at the Olímpico, all of them friendlies. There have been eight throughout history, with four wins, three draws and one loss. The last game at Barça’s new home came in 2004, in a 2-1 win over Peru, with goals from Etxeberría and Rúben Baraja. Andorra also sent games to the Olímpico: there were three defeats in three games, one against France and two against England.

The last matches played in Montjuïc were played by the selection of the United Arab Emirates, in 2018, in a 1-1 draw with Honduras and in a 2-0 defeat against Venezuela.

HOME OF THE OVAL BALL

The Olímpico did not live only on football. The 1992 Olympic and Paralympic Games, boxing matches and track and field events were also held here, but the mainstays of the stadium were rugby and American football matches. The first event in its history was a rugby match between Spain and Italy, this being the first match in the history of the Spanish national team, which was won 9-0. American football was also a reality there: it was the home of the Barcelona Dragons, the main Catalan team in sports, and hosted the 1997 World Bowl Final, won by the Dragons. In addition, he has received two games since nfl between 1993 and 1994.

Barcelona will send the matches of the 2023-24 season and at least the beginning of the 2024-25 season to the Olímpico. However, UEFA will be notified of the use of the stadium in its official competitions. The Camp Nou is expected to undergo a capacity expansion for 110,000 people – it currently holds 96,000 -, becoming the third largest stadium in the world. The total value of the investment in the stadium is almost 5 billion reais.
