A man dies after a boat capsizes in the Uruguay River


The searches were carried out at dawn with the aid of hooks on the surface of the river and the body of the victim was found at 7.30 this Friday (31).

A 51-year-old Argentine citizen has died after a boat sank in the Uruguay River, in Porto Xavier, in northwest Rio Grande do Sul. The accident was registered this Thursday (30). According to the military fire brigade (CBM), five people were rescued alive by the Argentine Navy, three of whom were on the riverbank on the neighboring country’s side and two on the Brazilian side. The group was trying to cross the river to Brazil when the accident occurred.




The searches were carried out at dawn with the aid of hooks on the surface of the river and the body of the victim was found at 7.30 this Friday (31). “We managed to hook the body of this victim who was submerged in the water of the Uruguay River, here 300 meters from the port of Porto Xavier,” informed Lieutenant Vandré Reolon de Souza, commander of the CBM of São Luiz Gonzaga.

With a population of 10,000, Porto Xavier is located 550 km from Porto Alegre and 80 km from Santa Rosa. Across the border is the Argentine city of San Javier.
