Unlike the horror movie “The Pope’s Exorcist” with Russell Crowe which is based on true events, on Netflix there is “Johnny”, which depicts the life of a bigoted priest.
The film is about Jan Kaczkowski (Dawid Ogrodnik), a compassionate priest who works in a hospice and turns the life of an ex-con who is sent there for community service.
The priest, although suffering from health, shows that he has a very different way of seeing things and is willing to care and care for people.
Directed by Daniel Jaroszek, the 2022 Polish film is among the most watched on Netflix, but its emotional story and powerful character moments are based on the life of the real Jan Kaczkowski.

Just like the Netflix movie “Beyond the Universe” is based on a heartbreaking true story, “Johnny” was also inspired by the life of a sick priest who always showed great empathy and love.
Father Jan Kaczkowski, born in July 1977 in Poland, was a priest of the Catholic Church who, when visiting many cancer patients, realized that they had many deficiencies and their anguish was great.
That’s why he took on the task of establishing The Puck Hospice, a hospice on wheels that provided medical care, until in 2009, thanks to the support of doctors and nurses, he officially established the hospice.
However, tragedy struck the father when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a brain tumor, in 2012. Although he was given only a few months to live, the priest lived for several more years.
Father Jan wrote several books about living life to the fullest, based on his experience of being terminally ill and also blind from birth.
As in the film, priest Jan meets Patryk (in the film played by Piotr Trojan) at a moment in his life and becomes an important influence that guides him through his problems and is his true friend.
Patryk in the film and in real life had an abusive father, became addicted to drugs and got into trouble with the law, until he traded his life with his father and became a chef.
It was Patryk himself, who is also dedicated to honoring the memory of priest Jan, who spoke to screenwriter Maciej Kraszewski and told him the true story of the man who changed his life.
So Kraszewski wrote the screenplay for the movie “Johnny” and also a novel of the same name, published in September 2022, which tells the life story of Father Jan Kaczkowski, who died in 2016 at the age of 39.
