Lula’s disapproval equals Bolsonaro’s in first three months in government, research shows

According to Datafolha, the government of the PT is rated good or excellent by 38% of those interviewed, against 32% for Bolsonaro in the first 90 days of his mandate. The numbers reflect the division in the country after a narrow victory in the second round. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had his worst rating in the first three months of government compared to his previous two terms, according to a Datafolha poll released on Saturday ( 01/04).

The disapproval of the Lula government is the same as that of former president Jair Bolsonaro in the first months of his mandate, within the poll’s margin of error.

According to Datafolha, 38% consider the Lula government good or excellent, against 30% who judge it right and 29% bad or very bad. They did not know how to give an opinion, 3% of the interviewees.

During the same period of his government, Bolsonaro had a significantly lower rating of excellent or good than Lula, with 32%. The percentage of those who rated his government as bad or terrible was virtually the same as the current president’s, at 30%, and 33% rated the government just.

The result of both the current president and that of his predecessor marks the worst performance recorded in the first 90 days of all the representatives who have governed the country since the return of democracy in 1985.

Datafolha interviewed 2,028 voters between March 29 and 30, in 126 cities. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Worst judgment on Lula’s three terms

At the start of his first term in 2003, President Lula had 43% approval in the first 90 days, with only 10% disapproval. In 2007, when the second term of the PT in the presidency began, the consent of the government was 48%, against 14% of those who disapproved.

The current approval is similar to that of the first mandates of some of his predecessors, such as Fernando Henrique Cardoso, in 1995 (39%); Fernando Collor de Mello, in 1990 (36%) and Itamar Franco, in 1992 (34%), but it is below the numbers of his successor, Dilma Rousseff, whose government recorded 47% excellent/good in 2011.

29% bad/terrible equals the worst moment of the entire first eight years of Lula’s rule, in December 2005, between the revelation of the monthly benefits scandal.

The current numbers, however, correspond to the political reality of the country, which is experiencing a period of strong polarization. In October last year, Lula won the election just 1.8 percentage points ahead of Bolsonaro in the second round.

Greater support among the poorest and the North-Eastern

Lula obtained the best survey results in the Northeastern states, with 53% of excellent and good (26% of the Datafolha sample), and among the poorest population (21% bad/very bad among those earning up to 2 wages minimum, 55% of respondents). Disapproval was also the lowest among 16- to 24-year-olds, with 17% viewing government as bad.

Among traditionally Bolsonarist voters, Lula has 30% of the votes among the wealthiest; 29% in the south of the country (15% of those interviewed) and 28% among Evangelicals (27% of the total).

According to the poll, 51% of voters believe the president has done less than he could have done in the first three months of his government. At the same time, 18% think he did more and 25% think he did what was expected. More responses added up to 2%, and 4% were unable to respond

The poll also reveals that 50% of respondents believe Lula will make a great or good government, versus 27% who expect it to be regular and 21% bad or terrible.
