More than 1.1 million voters have been called to the polls since this Sunday (2) to choose the new governor of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northern Italy.
The polls will remain open today until 11pm (local time) and this Monday (3) until 3pm. The election will also serve to renew mayors and city councils in 24 cities, including Udine.
The counting of votes will begin shortly after the closure of the 1,360 sections divided into 215 municipalities. The current governor of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the conservative Massimiliano Fedriga, of Matteo Salvini’s ultra-nationalist League, is the favorite for re-election.
His main rival is regional councilor Massimo Moretuzzo, supported by a group of parties such as the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement (M5S). His goal is to surpass the 18% of votes that the PD collected in this region in last year’s general elections. The results will serve as a thermometer for the national government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, but also for the new secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), Elly Schlein.
According to the data relating to almost all the sections (1,262 out of 1,360) available on the region’s website, the turnout until 12:00 (local time) fluctuates between 11% and 12%. In the last round of regional elections, in 2018, when voting took place in a single day, the final turnout up to the same time was 18.07%. .
