The film music world is in mourning. Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who notably scored the soundtracks of The Last Emperor, Furyo and The Revenant, died on March 28 in Tokyo of cancer. This pioneer of electronic music was 71 years old.
After forming the electronic music group Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1977, which made him very famous in Japan, Ryuichi Sakamoto began writing film scores. A new stage in his career that will bring him international recognition.
In 1983, Ryuichi Sakamoto signed on to score Furyo, Nagisa Oshima’s drama directed by David Bowie. But four years later, with the music of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, he really revealed himself to the general public. His score for the film director (which he would later find again for Little Buddha) won him an Oscar.
A prolific artist, Ryuichi Sakamoto has worked with the greatest cinematographers, from Pedro Almodovar (Talons Aiguilles) to Volker Schlöndorff (The Scarlet Servant) through Brian De Palma (Snake Eyes, Femme Fatale). In 2015, he distinguished himself by composing the naturalistic score for The Revenant, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film directed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Below is Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music for The Revenant:
In addition to his work for the Seventh Art, Ryuichi Sakamoto, an ardent environmental activist and key figure in the fight against nuclear power, designed the theme for the Barcelona Summer Games. This main figure of the music world has been living in the USA since the 90s.
