Marvel Comics hypothesizes the recurrence of retroactive continuity through two words, which will always serve to “reset” its main chronology
The universe of an entertainment brand must always change. The fee of a company that produces mass content is constantly influenced by time, by technological innovations, by the saturation of its intellectual properties and by the market itself and by public behavior. Therefore, changes are really needed. And Marvel Comics just changed a major concept of their multiverse to just two words: causal virus.
- Alternate ending of Civil War with Iron Man’s ultimate weapon
- Star Wars: HQ changes the canonical rule about Jedi and their lightsabers
Marvel has never been afraid to take a gamble and experiment, and after its massive bankruptcy in the 1990s, it has learned that constantly reframing its lines and concepts is the best way to keep its stories balancing between creating new ownership, commercial success and editorial quality.
In Time of Massacre #1, by Steve Kroce and Bryan Valenza, released last week, we once again see the Thing team up with his “rival”, the Hulk. In the storyline, we see the duo face off against a bizarre foe who looks like a mix of Doctor Doom and Iron Man. The heroes lose and are taken to “a distant place and time.”
When this happens, the story mentions something called the Causal Virus (or Causal Virus), which suggests a mysterious process capable of always bringing heroes back when they die or are taken to another universe, i.e. it is as if continuity is retroactive (or retcon) has been made official as something recurring in the form of a part of the very living concept of the company’s universe.
The idea of a “causal virus” suggests that Earth-616’s victories against villains like Thanos were never in the hands of its heroes. Instead, this virus resets the status quo to ensure Marvel characters are always where they need to be when the next big threat strikes. It means the Avengers are never in danger of being trapped or killed, as long as this virus alters the way the narrative works.
This ensures that no matter how bad things get or how much a villain destroys Earth-616, it will always return to the status quo thanks to the causal virus. As it turns out, however, things don’t work the same way for the other Earths of the Marvel Multiverse, just for the main canon, ensuring that the main publisher properties will always bring their classic characters back into the timeline no matter what. .
