Dwayne Johnson has been in charge of announcing the new project
Seven years have passed since we met ‘Moana’, the protagonist of the story set two millennia ago on some islands in the South Pacific. The young woman wants to explore the world by sailing on the ocean. She is the only daughter of an important captain who belongs to a family with several generations of sailors. However, now her father is very averse to her daughter’s wishes.
Released in 2016, the original version, called ‘Moana’, featured the voices of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson in the roles of the protagonist and Maui, the demigod with whom the young woman will run into on her adventure.
Now it’s been his own Dwayne Johnson Who Has Announced A Live Action Remake Of ‘Moana’.
“It is an honor to say that we are bringing the beautiful story of Moana to the big screen in live action! Maui changed my life and I am honored to partner with Disney to tell our story through the realm of music and dance, which in essence is who we are as a Polynesian people,” Johnson tweeted.
The 2016 animated film was a hit for Disney, grossing more than $680 million at the box office. The new film will be produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia through Seven Bucks Productions and Beau Flynn through Flynn Picture Co. Also executive producing is Auli’i Cravalho.
“This is the story of my culture, and it is also emblematic of the grace and warrior strength of our people.. I carry this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the figure and spirit of my late grandfather, Grand Chief Peter Maivia, so it runs very deep to me. -The Disney character was inspired by Johnson’s grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, leader of a famous family of Samoan wrestlers-. I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special effort, because there is no better world to honor the history of our people, our passion and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as a Polynesian people.
Humbled to say we’re bringing #MOANA‘s beautiful story to the live action big screen!#MAUI changed my life (miss you grandpa) and I’m honored to partner with @DisneyStudios to tell our story through the realm of music & dance, which at the core is who we are as Polynesian people🪝 pic.twitter.com/CxJFKQewUS

Before we see ‘Moana’ in the flesh, other versions of Disney animated films need to come: the live-action of ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Peter Pan and Wendy’ will be the ones that arrive in 2023, specifically in May and April respectively. The classic ‘Snow White’ or the story of ‘Mufasa: the Lion King 2’ are also underway.
