The actor could give life to the young Neil McCauley, the role played by Robert de Niro in 1995.
Almost three decades have passed since the already classic by Michael Mann, ‘Heat’, was released. Now it looks like the director and studio are finally on track for a sequel.. While the rumors have been circulating for weeks, according to Deadline, Warner Bros. is now in negotiations to develop ‘Heat 2,’ a sequel to the 1995 classic that Mann recently turned into a novel.. The book, published in August, became a New York Times #1 bestseller.
In addition, according to the publication there are rumors that Adam Driver, who recently starred in ‘Ferrari,’ under Mann, is in talks to play the young Neil McCauley in the movie (the role DeNiro played in the first). At the moment neither Warner Bros nor the filmmaker’s representatives have commented.
The sources say that Warner Bros. is in negotiations to finance the development of the project and that, for now, no partner is involved. Arnon Milchan’s New Regency co-financed the first film, and insiders say that if the project is in a good place to move forward, they will be given a chance to refinance it. As of now, Mann is the guiding force moving this project forward and things are heading in the right direction to find a home.
‘Heat 2’ has been written by Mann and Meg Gardiner and is not a novelization of Mann’s film, but rather tells the story of everything that happens before and after the main characters. The book jumps between two time periods, the first following Chris Shiherlis as he tries to evade the LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna after a bank robbery gone wrong and pushes into new territory in the tri-border area. and Southeast Asia. The second story takes readers to Chicago in 1988, when McCauley, Shiherlis, and their high-profile team are taking scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexico border, and in Chicago. At the same time, Hanna is establishing herself as a rising star in the Chicago Police Department hunting down an ultraviolent gang of home invaders. The consequences of McCauley’s moves and the pursuit of Hanna will cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative.
Since its publication in August, when it became one of the most important publications of the year, Mann hinted that he eventually wanted to adapt the novel into a film.. At the time, however, he was starting Ferrari production with Driver and all of his focus was on that project. Although he is still immersed in the post-production of ‘Ferrari’, it seems that the future project is taking shape and ‘Heat 2’ will be Mann’s next feature film, one that he has been passionate about making for almost three decades.

Since the beginning of the year, rumors have circulated as to which star would return or which new actors would take on a younger version of these roles that have since become iconic. From Al Pacino returning to play Hanna in the present day to Ana de Armas playing McCauley’s love interest in the 1988 timeline, there are plenty waiting to join in, but Driver is the one we hear is firmly attached.
The original 1995 film starred Pacino, Robert De Niro as McCauley, and Val Kilmer as Shiherlis. The film was a success within the films of the 90s and today it has the distinction between the classic film audience within the police genre.
