Beau is scared : Joaquin Phoenix looking for his mother
In just two feature films, Ari Aster established himself as one of the must-see new names in American horror cinema. With Inheritance AND Mid summerthe director has offered two difficult stories centered on the poisoned family and sentimental relationships, revisiting already brilliantly invested structures such as that of the haunted house and that of the community living in autarchy.
The director is about to unveil his third nightmare, titled Beau is scared. An “epic odyssey” by a “paranoid man” to “find his mother,” according to the official synopsis. Accompanied by Parker Posey, Amy Ryan, Richard Kind, Nathan Lane or even Denis Ménochet, Joaquin Phoenix carries this project forward, dragging his tired carcass and revealing his most beautiful hallucinated aspect in what appears to be a psychedelic delirium as funny as it is frightening , to seen the first pictures.
A poetic swoon
During a surprise film session in NYC followed by a Q&A hosted by Emma Stone, Ari Aster got back on Joaquin Phoenix’s investment. The director praised his “honesty”hallmark of an actor capable of interpreting everything, starting from the tormented characters (The boss, A beautiful day, Joker).
According to the director, the actor is so involved that he even faints during filming that does not concern him. Ari Aster recalled shooting a scene that centered around Patti LuPone, who lends her features to Beau’s mother (via Expiration):
There was this very intense scene for Patti and it was a shot at her, not him, and he fell. I was really pissed because it was a really good take. He was confused so I walked over and watched him collapse.
I understood that it was serious because he let himself be touched and taken care of. (…) she did not appear in the image and was there to help, until she collapsed. It’s very poetic that he passed out while he was taking someone else.
